UI Hospitals & Clinics was the first hospital in Iowa to be designated a Magnet Hospital (2004) by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the first hospital in Iowa to be re-designated three times (2008, 2013, 2018, 2023).
Our hospital has 88 beds designated for inpatient psychiatric care and 12 chairs assigned to brief care in a Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU). Our outpatient clinics care for hundreds of patients each week.
Inpatient Care
Adult Psychiatry (1JPE)
John Pappajohn Pavillion (1JPE) is a 4-bed inpatient unit with 4 beds for adults experiencing psychiatric symptoms related to mood disorders, thought disorders and, in some cases, co-occurring intellectual disabilities with psychiatric overlay. Patients are the most acutely ill and tend toward more dysregulated behavior than other adult units. Behavior management plans are supported by psychology professionals. The unit is routinely staffed with Registered Nurses, Psychiatric Nursing Assistants, and Behavioral Health Consultants within a treatment team that includes therapists, physicians, and social workers.
Adult Psychiatry (7 RC)
The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics opened a new psychiatric unit in 2021. This state-of-the-art unit design features private rooms, natural light-filled spaces, open nurses’ station, and exercise rooms. Innovative technology has been integrated into this space to promote a safe environment for staff members and patients.
7RCP is separated into a 12-bed mood disorder unit and a 13-bed general adult psychiatry unit. We utilize an evidence-based, patient-centered, interdisciplinary approach, with contributions from physicians, psychologists, advanced practice providers, master-level therapists, nurses, social workers, dieticians, occupational and recreational therapists, all striving to work collaboratively with patients and families to provide the best possible care. 7RCP features a new and collaborative position, Behavioral Health Consultant, with a goal to elevate the patient and team outcomes. Evidence-based therapeutic modalities utilized on the unit include dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, and trauma-informed care.
Adult NeuroPsychiatry (2JPW)
2JPW is a 19-bed adult unit that provides care for patient with general psychiatric conditions, with a particular emphasis on thought disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar, and other psychotic disorders. 2JPW also provides specialized services for adult patients with an intellectual disability and co-occurring mental illness (IDMI) who display challenging behaviors. The interdisciplinary treatment team includes physicians, psychologists, advanced practice providers, master-level therapists, nurses, social workers, dieticians, occupational and recreational therapists, behavioral health consultants, and a cadre of specialists who collaborate with the treatment team to support the IDMI population.
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (1JPW)
1JPW is a 15-bed inpatient unit dedicated to psychiatric evaluation and care of child and adolescent patients (3-17 years old). Patients on the child and adolescent unit experience depression, anxiety, eating disorders, intellectual disabilities, substance use disorders, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Members of a full complement of professionals provide structured therapy, including dialectical behavior therapy. A unique unit design incorporates Circle School, gymnasium, and outdoor activities to improve patient experience and outcomes.
Medical-Psychiatry (3BT)
The Medicine Psychiatry Inpatient Unit (3BT) is a specialized 15 bed secure adult inpatient unit that provides care to patients with various co-occurring medical and psychiatric illnesses. 3BT nursing staff and faculty physicians are dually trained and competent in both the medical and psychiatric disciplines. Patients admitted to 3BT often have complex health and social needs. Interdisciplinary collaboration between various healthcare professionals is necessary to meet the multidimensional needs of these individuals. Being one of only a few Medicine Psychiatry units in the country, 3BT allows healthcare professionals the unique opportunity to provide holistic patient-centered care, treating both mind and body.
Geriatric Psychiatry (2JPE)
2JPE is a 14-bed adult inpatient unit dedicated to geriatric and adult psychiatric patients. Common diagnoses for patients on 2JPE include dementia, depression, anxiety, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s. Services provided include medication management, assistance with activities of daily living, occupational and recreational therapies, and electroconvulsive therapy.
Crisis Stabilization Unit (7JPP CSU)
The CSU is a short-stay unit with a maximum capacity of 12. Members of the interdisciplinary treatment team are prepared to manage patients who are experiencing a psychiatric crisis and in need of immediate, around-the-clock care and observation. The unit’s open concept features a large central room with comfortable reclining chairs, rather than traditional hospital beds. Outpatient Care
Adult Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic (1JPP)
The clinic employs interdisciplinary approaches to provide outpatient psychiatric care to adults.
Chemical Dependence Services (5BT)
The Chemical Dependence Service is an outpatient treatment service offering multiple levels fo care for patients with substance use disorders.
The program operates during the day and evening, Monday through Friday.
Child Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic (2JPP)
The Child Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic provides outpatient assessment and therapy for children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders and illnesses.
Psychiatric Partial Hospital (PPH; 5BT)
The PPH provides intensive psychiatric services in an outpatient setting as an alternative to inpatient care, including tracks for patients with eating disorders and mood disorders. Some people enter the PPH from the community. For others, PPH provides a transition after acute care hospitalization.
