This is an interesting read--- my takeaway (on the ability to RESPOND) is that the officers were slowed down because the access control system i place was malfunctioning and/or unattended. What are your thoughts?#LawEnforcement#Safety#Security#OOPS (as in oh, crum!)https://lnkd.in/gK9Xs_yuis

This is a clearly well-intentioned piece of legislation but fails to realize the fact that access control and physical security are subject to human error. More important is to implement a system of protection in the event that an active shooter breaches your perimeter. A license to carry does not mean you are competent to carry. Get trained. Properly trained. Then practice. Monthly. The skills you learn on the range have a half-life of about 30 days if not properly reviewed and practiced. #security https://lnkd.in/g-mdn-hU

Schools can have the best security plans in place supported by the best technology but something as simple as an unlocked door can mean the difference between a tragedy or an incident that ended without any injuries. This school was doing something right so it prevented what could have been a significant tragedy.I don't think school was in session and I haven't seen any reports of how many children and staff were in the building at the time. But, when children are present, the risks can increase significantly not only making schools a more attractive target to psychopathic school shooters, but also increasing the demands on maintenance personnel, staff, and teachers. Combined with the added distractions, it increases the risk something could be overlooked.Every school is different but it's incredibly important to study and learn from every reported incident and ensure security protocols are being updated for every eventuality, even those that weren't previously thought of. As I often tell clients, yesterday’s unforeseeable risks, are tomorrow’s foreseeable risks defined by today’s events.Perhaps most importantly, every plan should start with a thorough Threat and Vulnerability Risk Assessment (TVRA) and be designed using fundamental Protection-In-Depth principles, supported by well-thought-out, and properly configured, security technology, policies, procedures controls, and staffing. In this case, whatever they had in place worked at the time. But the demands and distractions were likely low, and the shooter was able to get to the final layer of protection where he was denied entry.https://lnkd.in/eajSaznK

Nothing is more hurtful than, when one has fallen in the line of duty by stupidity and recklessness of someone ill with a gun. This should be alarming for all working in the same industry, keep training and learning a constant part of the process. If it can save even a single life, it's worth every damn effort. My condolence to the family and related. #security #training #toronto #pickeringshoot #securityguard #pivotsecurity #staySafe

As Professionals, this is unacceptable and we have to do better. I have taken pictures of Security & LE personnel out in public with an empty holster. (Yes, I discreetly asked them about it, which they quickly exited stage right) #securityprofessional #lawenforcement #firearmstraining

The disturbing rise of swatting incidents, where fake threats elicit massive law enforcement responses, is putting various industries like K-12 schools at risk. These false alarms drain resources and create opportunities for real harm, as seen in accidental shootings during responses. Alarmingly, a 2023 survey found 11% of teens have experienced swatting. The FBI has launched efforts to track and prevent these increasingly prevalent threats, which have spawned subclasses like hate swatting. Staying vigilant is crucial.https://lnkd.in/gBhrqf*ck Amy Brennan Rock Campus Safety Magazine#Swatting #SchoolSafety #LawEnforcement #EmergencyResponse

Colleges and universities endorse #OperationID as a security system for protecting students against loss, theft, burglary and worse. It might seem old fashioned, but it really works because the strategy dovetails with police procedures. MyPropertyIDRegistry is police accepted and the global state of the art of #TracingTech. https://lnkd.in/gXdETfNG

All too often, when attacks are thwarted, schools & businesses blame good security measures, policies, etc. for the successful outcome, when in reality, it was pure luck. This looks like it might be one of those times. It appears that it was a lack of effort/intent/skill on the assailant's behalf that led to him being the only person killed in the incident. Make sure your active shooter response training isn't based on luck (Run, Hide Fight, ALICE, the traditional lockdown, and any similar variations of those models are luck-based). Our active shooter response training program is a skill based system. Please contact us to learn more.
