Homemade Products for Skin, Health & Home

Jan Berry is a fellow blogger and author of the soapmaking books, Simple Natural Soapmaking and Easy Homemade Melt and Pour Soaps. Both of these books are well written, with accurate information and reliable recipes. So I am super excited that I’ve been able to expand my collection with The Big Book of Homemade Products for Your Skin, Health and Home! This book is an expanded version of the original, with 50 new recipes that anyone can make using herbs, flowers and other plants. I love that the recipes in this book are so easy to make and use a limited number of ingredients — many of which can be foraged for in the spring.

There are, in fact, many timely recipes in this book related to home, health and skin care. Some of the natural skin care recipes you’ll definitely want to try from this book include her Bee Balm Intensive Hand Butter, Violet Flower cleanser, Sunflower Lotion Bars, Catnip & Basil Insect Repellent Spray, Lavender Bug Bite Sticks and Spring Detox Deodorant. And, in case symptoms of colds, flu or even seasonal allergies are worrisome, there are also great home remedies for things like Lemon Balm & Ginger Sore Throat Drops, Basil Mint Sore Throat Spray, Cold Care Shower Steamers and Stress Relief Massage Oil.

In addition to the many recipes included in The Big Book of Homemade Products for Your Skin, Health and Home, you’ll also love that this book opens flat, without busting the spine. Yet it’s not spiral bound, so it still looks great on your bookshelf or coffee table.

I personally plan to make quite a few of the recipes in this book myself. And it will definitely help with inspiration for my own, future DIY projects. The recipes are 100% practical for everyday living, all natural and easy to make. So it’s definitely a book you’ll reference time and again.

Natural Hair Care Solutions

In the meantime, I want to share one of Jan’s recipes, from her new book, for making a DIY hair detangler.

Jan’s detangling spray recipe is similar to the one that her mom made for her and her sisters when they were kids. Not only did Jan and her sisters often end up with tangled messy hair, but they also had an aversion to hairbrushes. This DIY hair detangler worked wonders to ease tangles from hair, and in turn made the hair brushing process a breeze. I love that it’s made using just 4-ingredients. Therefore it’s super easy and affordable to make.

Jan created her variation of a detangling spray recipe from her mother’s own DIY hair detangler. A recipe that she later used on her own daughter’s waist length hair. With a few tweaks to her mom’s recipe, such as the addition of flower hydrosol and essential oils, she gave her DIY hair detangler additional aromatherapeutic properties, as well as added benefits for scalp care.

While you can use any hydrosol of your choice for this recipe, Jan chose a lovely combination of lavender and sweet orange essential oils for her DIY hair detangler. Not only are these essential oils kids safe, they also have a great synergy that helps to reduce symptoms of anxiety and promote a feeling of calm. (And some days, the grown ups need that just as much as the kids. Am I right?)

Here’s how to make your own DIY hair detangler with essential oils.

How to Use A DIY Hair Detangler:

To use, spritz the detangler over the ends and middle strands of your hair. Comb or brush thespray through your hair to smooth out any tangles. As with all hair products, avoid spraying in your eyes.

What Is Hydrosol?

What is a hydrosol? Hydrosols, also called hydrolats, are aromatic waters that are created when essential oils are distilled. They carry many of the benefits associated with the essential oil,but are extra gentle. I used blood orange hydrosol in this recipe; other good choices include calendula, lavender, chamomile, neroli or lemon verbena. You can purchase certified organic hydrosols from Mountain Rose Herbs here.
