I shared a great bunk bed with my brother growing up.

My dad built it. He bought a large book of woodworking plans which included plans for a bunk bed. This bed was cool in that it could be separated into two individual beds.

For years my brother and I shared a room; once we got our own rooms, we each got a bed by separating the bunk bed.

Since then (I grew up in the ’80s and ’90s), bunk beds have come a long way.

Why an L-shaped bunk bed?

The answer is simple and it explains why this is such a popular bunk bed style.

The reason you should buy an L-shaped bunk bed is the perpendicular configuration allows for more features and functionality such as dresser drawers and desks without taking up much more space in the room.

In fact, it’s the ultimate bunk bed design. Even if you have your kids in separate rooms, bunk beds are a great investment because there are extra beds when your kids have friends stay over.

2 Types of L-Shaped Bunk Beds

1. Overlapping (typical bunk bed design): The overlapping style is where there’s an upper and lower bed.

2. Adjacent bi-loft style: The adjacent style is where the beds butt up against one another in an L-shape. It’s more like a loft bed creating additional space underneath the loft bed.

FYI, you can also get triple bunks in an l-shape (or t-shape).

Other Notable Features to Consider

1. Can the lower bunk be separated? Some of our featured bunks have a lower bed on wheels which can be moved to another place in the room. In other words, the lower bed is not part of the support system for the upper bunk. Other units are designed so that the lower bunk cannot be moved.

2. Size of the beds: Some L-shaped bunks offer a full sized bed on the bottom while others are twin over twin.

3. Stairs vs. Ladder: Bunks are known for having ladders to access the upper bed; however, some models use small staircases instead.
